Cracked Heels & Fissures

What are cracked heels?

Cracked Heels are the result of dry and thickened skin, sometimes with calluses around the edge of the heel. While smooth cracks are just visible without causing pain, deep fissures can be painful and even bleed.

What causes cracked heels?

The causes of cracked heels include:

  • Extremely dry and hyperkeratotic skin which cracks under pressure
  • An underlying health condition such as diabetes, eczema or psoriasis
  • Increased weight gain
  • Conditions related to poor circulation (cardiovascular diseases)
  • Poor nutrition

What are the symptoms of cracked heels or fissures?

  • Dry or itchy heels
  • Hard or hyperkeratotic skin on the heels, which becomes brittle and under pressure it cracks
  • Pain or discomfort while walking or difficulties while standing
  • Bleeding or discharge coming from the inflamed area

What are the treatment options when cracked heels or fissures occur?

The treatment for cracked heels can be relatively simple and, with constant care and home treatment, recurrence can be easily prevented. Please book an appointment and I will treat you and help you learn what should be done to have hydrated smooth skin that's soft to touch.

Using the right product and moisturiser, losing excess weight, improving nutrition and wearing more supportive footwear all can help with reducing the possibility of developing cracked heels or deep fissures.
