Which specialist to choose? It depends on the situation.

Foot Health Professional

A Registered and qualified Foot Health Practitioner is a professional who is qualified to carry out routine foot care treatments, which can be complemented with hand care services.

They carry out general check-ups on feet and hands such as: shortening and filing toenails and fingernails – manicure / pedicure,  treating corns, calluses and cracked heals, preventing and treating fungal nail infections and or athlete's foot, treating verrucas or ingrown toenails, building up nail prothesis – toenail or fingernail reconstruction – Wilde-Pedique, educating patients about nail and skin treatments at home.

Podiatrist

A Podiatrist specialises in the study, diagnosis and treatment of long-term foot, ankle and lower leg conditions.  They aim to prevent and correct deformities of the feet and lower legs by using orthotics and are able to offer advice on the correct style of footwear for your feet.

Many individuals visit a Podiatrist if they are suffering from problems with ligaments, tendons and bones or if they are experiencing constant pain in their feet or lower legs.

Foot Health Treatments

Corn & Callus

Corns and calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin on specific areas of the foot - what we call chronic pressure points.

In most cases, both corns and calluses are simple and painless to treat. A single sterile tools and instruments are used to eliminate the hard skin or enucleate the painful corn, promptly providing you with relief and comfort.

Ingrown toenail

Ingrown toenails are a common condition in which the corner, sharp edge or side of a toenail grows into the skin and soft tissue, called the nail fold, and the nail pierces the flesh of the toe. The result is pain, inflamed and red skin, swelling and bleeding. Sometimes when the lesion is major and chronic, an infection occurs causing pus.

Your toe is very sore. Under pressure you feel sharp pain like a needle and at the same time the toe is swollen and the surrounding area is red.

Fungal Nail Infection

Anyone can get a fungal nail infection at any point in their lives and it can form in either your fingernails or your toenails.

A fungal nail infection can cause the nail to lose its shape, become brittle and break off, crumble, or become discolored (It can turn brown, yellow or even black in some cases.). The skin around the nail might itch, crack, become sore or swollen and red.

Wilde Pedique – Nail reconstruction

A nail reconstruction is the restoration of a previously damaged or traumatised nail. Although building up a prosthesis on the nail is mostly done for cosmetic purposes, occasionally, when the nail damage could turn into an ingrown nail, it can be seen as a health treatment in order to prevent a painful condition.

Cracked Heels - Fissures

Cracked Heels are the result of dry and thickened skin, sometimes with calluses around the edge of the heel. While smooth cracks are just visible without causing pain, deep fissures can be painful and even bleed.

There are some common symptoms of cracked heels or fissures: dry or itchy heels, hard or hyperkeratotic skin on the heels, which becomes brittle and under pressure it cracks, pain or discomfort while walking or difficulties while standing, bleeding or discharge coming from the inflamed area.

Thickened toenails

Thickened toenails, or onychauxis, is the abnormal thickening of the nail plate. It is more common in toenails, especially the big toenail.

The symptoms of thickened toenails are similar to those of a fungal nail infection. Therefore, it is important to get checked out by a professional to ensure you receive the appropriate treatment for the correct condition.

Symptoms of thickened nails include: abnormal thickening of the toenail which is hard to cut or trim, a change in colour – the nail turns yellow, after a trauma, blood accumulates under the nail and it causes the nail to appear black. The above mentioned symptomes can be followed by feeling additional pressure and/or pain in the top of the toe.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection of the skin, usually below the ankle area. It is medically referred to as tinea pedis. It is a highly common skin problem among athletes, hence the name.

Some common symptoms of athlete’s foot are: itching, red, scaly patches on the skin, dry appearance no matter how often you apply cream on your feet, stinging or burning, breakdown of the skin between the toes causing cracks or fissures.

Swety feet - Hyperhidrosis

Sweating is a natural process which helps to regulate body temperature, thus preventing overheating. Sweat is an odorless fluid released from your eccrine glands (sweat glands).

Excessive sweating of the skin is called hyperhidrosis. It causes your body to sweat more than it needs to, sometimes for no apparent reason. Macerated skin and a changed environment can lead to negative symptoms such as sweaty feet, which is often smelly and causes discomfort or, in more serious cases, skin or nail infections such as viral, bacterial or fungal infections.
